First and foremost: Track@Way DOES NOT come with maps!

Stop, don't panic...

It's not so bad! You can easily fix the problem if you keep reading this page.


Why doesn't Track@Way provide maps?

Because maps are a complex problem. I am a single devleoepr and so it's impossible for me to maintain a database of maps, heck, it's not even possible to acquire such a database for me! Moreover, the use case scenario of Track@Way requires very detailed maps (like 1:25.000 or more) and, frankly, there is not much high-quality easily accessible maps out there. So i preferred to leave it to you to provide your own maps. But it's not difficult, read on.

So what options do i have?

You have many options, let's see:

  • You can use your own paper maps, you need to scan them and calibrate them.
  • You can purchase/find already calibrated raster maps in OziExplorer or JPG/TIFF/PNG/etc formats on the web
  • You can use an online service like OpenStreetMap to download maps on-the-go
  • You can create your offline map using a tool like MOBAC
  • No, maps like Nokia Maps even if already downloaded on your phone cannot be used.

Scan and calibrate your own maps

This is probably the easiest step if you already own a lot of detailed paper maps (like me) which you like and you know.

So, the hard part here is to actually scan the maps. I have an A4 scanner which takes quite some time to scan piece by piece an entire map... and then you need to use a software like the GIMP to stitch them all toghether. Track@Way does not have limits on maps size. You can go up to more than 60.000x60.000 pixels images, more than your computer will handle. JPG is the most supported format (along with OziExplorer ozfx2, note that some of the newer ozfx3 files might not be supported due to a change in the internal format), and faster to load. PNG and TIFF will also work but the initial loading will be slower. After the inital loading, the difference will not matter anymore.

After you have your map in JPG format, you need to calibrate it. This is not so difficult actually, calibrate a map is a matter of binding specific points of the map image to a specific geographical coordinate on the earth surface. For optimal results, Track@Way requires you to have at least three calibration points, all expressed using the WGS84 datum, but the more you add the better it will be. The easiest way is to calibrate your map offline on your PC. Track@Way is capable of reading both OziExplorer ".map" format and CompeGPS calibration data format. So you can load your map on either two softwares and calibrate easily, then move both the map file and the calibration data file to the phone.

If you are on the field or if you prefer, you can use Track@Way to calibrate your map: there is a nice map editor inside Track@Way which lets you create your calibration points using your current position as starting point, making on-the-field calibrations quite easy!

Now just name your map and your calibration files with the same name (just different file extension) and load it in Track@Way, it's done.


Find raster maps on the internet

There are quite some sources for raster maps on the internet. Some are free some are not. I am NOT in any way supporting pirated maps, so please don't ask. Some links can be found in this forum under the maps section. Basically you must obtain the JPG/Ozf2/Ozfx3/TIFF/PNG/ecc raster file toghether with a calibration file (which can be an OziExplorer calibration file for example). Copy then to the phone and load into Track@Way.


Using an online service

Embedded into Track@Way there is support for online services. OpenStreetMap for example is preconfigured with some different flavours. Just enable the internet maps and the tiles will be downloaded as you go. Tiles will be stored on your memory card, so bandwidth will be kept at minimum. No, Google Maps cannot be used due to their policy which forbids offline storage.

You can precache entire areas on your PC and then copy the files to Track@Way for later usage, but this is not recomended. It is instead recomended to use MOBAC, see the next paragraph.


Using MOBAC to create your own maps

MOBAC is a niftly tool (written in Java, cross-platform) which let's yoyu download tiles from services like OpenStreetMap and create your own calibrated raster map to beu sed in Track@Way.

The best way to use it is to create an atlas in OZI Explorer format... Just select the area you want, pick a reasonable zoom level, and create the atlas. MOBAC will create a PNG and a MAP file. Move those files to your phoen and import them into Track@Way. Done!

(note, since Track@Way works better with JPG files, you could also convert the PNG to JPG before moving the files to the phone, this will load much faster!)
